⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 paired well with an ice cold Pinot Grigio, a 40degree day and a pool 🤣

I wanted so much to love this book, it had a creepy premise and had featured heavily in my book recommendation feeds so I am reluctant to say it didn’t grip me like I hoped it would and hence why it has taken so long for me to put this review up!
Official description:
GONE GIRL meets ROOM in this page-turning thriller from one of Germany's hottest new talents
A windowless shack in the woods. Lena's life and that of her two children follows the rules set by their captor, the father: Meals, bathroom visits, study time are strictly scheduled and meticulously observed. He protects his family from the dangers lurking in the outside world and makes sure that his children will always have a mother to look after them.
One day Lena manages to flee - but the nightmare continues. It seems as if her tormentor wants to get back what belongs to him. And then there is the question whether she really is the woman called 'Lena', who disappeared without a trace 14 years ago. The police and Lena's family are all desperately trying to piece together a puzzle which doesn't quite seem to fit.
My thoughts:
It had everything a slow build “held captive by a deranged psycho” should have with lots of “who is it” moments and I did enjoy the journey and style of writing HOWEVER, I really really disliked the ending. I can’t say much without completely spoiling it but for me it was a WTF that makes zero sense and actually is just so implausible it ruined it for me. I felt like the author didn’t know how to finish it so just plonked a few chapters in with a random ending.
Have you read this book? What did you think?
