Nicci French delivers a twisty dangerous game of lies and deceit that unravel at a tantalisingly slow speed as Neve tries to cover up her non-involvement in the murder of her lover, and obviously the more she tries to cover things up, the more she lies and the deeper in she goes.
So much of Neve is relatable, the urge to protect her difficult child, the urge to protect her marriage and stop the uncovering of her affair but I will say this may not appeal to some audiences and you may be screaming at her stupid ill advised decisions, I mean of course her affair is going to be uncovered and trying to hide it by cleaning up a murder scene? Please! However this is the premise of the book and without that snap decision there is no book so go with it...
The book really brings to life the term "butterfly Effect" demonstrating that every action, every decision has has a consequence demonstrated by the avalanche of extraordinary events in her ordinary life. The gradual unraveling of the story creates unbearable tension as Nicci French explores the darker corners of the human psyche.
I read the book in two sittings as I couldn't wait to find out who did kill Saul and would Neve be found out? I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a slow building atmospheric psychological thriller filled with family tensions and moral dilemmas.
