I’m so torn on this one, I wanted it to be excellent and in some ways it is, the atmospheric setting, the way the author sets the claustrophobic mood with the weather closing in is not far short of remarkable. I was absorbed by the cover and the first handful of pages………… it’s then that it all starts to unravel.
The protagonist, Elin, who suspects her estranged brother of killing her younger brother as kids and who refused to see her mother in the months leading up to the book, has now travelled to Switzerland to attend his engagement party? Elin constantly fights her childhood memories around the events of her younger brother’s death throughout the book and the trauma plays a significant part in her character but the reveal is glossed over and dealt with in nothing more than a couple of passing sentences. The major breakthrough she has to identify the killer turns out to be a series of breadcrumbs (Read: Nail polish chips) which, even at a stretch, reads as complete implausible, the boyfriend (while always there) adds nothing to the story, the twist(s) at the end are very drawn out and slightly ambiguous and please don’t get me started on the completely bizarre epilogue. This book offered so much and I really loved the authors writing style, especially her scene setting. The actual story though falls down in far too many places for me to give this a rating any higher than 3/10 Certainly my biggest book disappointment of 2021 so far 😟
