With the sheer volume of thriller novels that come out on what seems like a daily basis finding one with a genuinely new spin can be quite difficult but Iain Ryan absolutely reinvents the genre with The Spiral.

Erma Bridges, part academic, part Muay-Thai fanatic……but as always with her own daily demons to fight is going though a tough time with her assistant Jenny going missing and a number of sexual misconduct claims being made against her. It is only one night, when lying in bed, when Jenny enters the room shooting Erma twice before turning the gun on herself does the questions really start t be being asked.

Following her recovery and being taunted by an enemy with her missing Dictaphone, Erma turns vigilante in an attempt to get to the truth.

The book is written in two voices firstly Erma’s real world actions but in part by Sero a character from a “choose your own adventure” style novel that ties in with Erma’s academic research as well as her own internal psyche and the two intertwine nicely with Sero’s behaviours becoming more frenetic and uncontrolled as Erma’s own story comes to its own climax.

Iain character building in this book is truly special, Erma’s persona is built at a wonderful pace as you peel of the layers throughout the book and the delicate balance between real world and fantasy is navigated wonderfully.

A truly great addition to the thriller genre and I have already added a Iain Ryan’s earlier book “The Student” to my TBR list

OFFICIAL BLURB:

ENTER THE SPIRAL.

FIND THE TRUTH.

So begins Erma's quest for the truth - and a dangerous, spiralling journey into the heart of darkness.
