THE TURN OF THE KEY is my first book by Ruth Ware and I can honestly say it will not be my last!
This is a unique and compelling thriller that sucked me in from the synopsis and had me guessing right until the end.
Ware does a fantastic job of building a dreadful sense of foreboding that make is frustratingly slow-burning for the first half of the book but for all the right reasons. The creepy atmospheric modern gothic style is not something I have read much of and the fact it leads you down a supernatural path before snapping back to a jaw dropping twist kept me reading late into the night with this one.
I loved the Scottish village setting at Heatherbrae House and Ware did a great job of really helping the reader visualise the clash of old Gothic style architecture with ridiculously ultra modern and I loved how this brought out te deepest feeling of unease in both the main character and the reader!
The heartbreaking end was a beautiful conclusion to a very well written book that certainly deserved the hype. I would stay stick with it through the middle when you start to feel it veer of into the supernatural and don't get too bogged down with the intricate detail, it just builds the suspense in this beautiful creepy modern thriller that will certainly keep you up at night!
